New Project Seeking Collaborators: Vocalist, Choreographer/Dancer

May 8, 2012 by Nathan Lively Leave a Comment

Hey there! If this is your first time here, why not sign up for updates via email in the sidebar over on the left? 😉

Normally posts about my music would go on Zé Dos Frangos, but it is under construction at the moment.

I am starting a new musical project and the most fun thing I can think to do with it is dance. I’ve been watching a lot of YAKfilms and CirqueDuSoleil recently and I would like to do something similarly captivating. Let’s combine urban dance, acrobatics, and indie rock into a really fun show to perform in theatres, music venues, and film. The first two creative elements I want to put together are a great vocalist to interpret the music and a choreographer to help me pull together the visual forms.

VOCALIST: My preference is a female vocalist who could also cover keyboard, guitar, or bass parts, but I am open to other possibilities. If you would be excited to work with the music in this demo, contact me.

CHOREOGRAPHER: If you have contacts in the local dance community and would like to help me put dancers with these tracks, contact me.

I just threw this together today to see what it would look like.

Passion Play and When I Was Portuguese Open In Berkeley

May 2, 2011 by Nathan Lively Leave a Comment

I’m proud to announce two new shows in Berkeley with sound design by New Sound Arts.

Sarah Ruhl’s Passion Play run until May 21st

Actors Ensemble of Berkeley at Live Oak Theatre is very proud to announce the West Coast Premiere of Sarah Ruhl’s Passion Play, a profound meditation on the meaning of devotion, identity and performance.

“That amount of profound theatre from Actors Ensemble of Berkeley is a bargain.” – By Albert Goodwyn, SF Performing Arts Examiner

When I Was Portuguese – A Sound Installation By Nathan Lively runs until May 20th

Nathan Lively transports us to behind the curtain at the National Theatre of Portugal, where we witness the inner lives of five veteran actresses navigating the final days of a Broadway-style production. This audio installation at ZUGHAUS Gallery offers an intimate glimpse into the theatre’s backstage energy and five individual lives. The end result is an avant-garde narrative and sound experience.

Money CAN Buy Happiness

March 27, 2011 by Nathan Lively Leave a Comment

I just read a post on Quora called What life lessons are unintuitive or go against common sense or wisdom? I wanted to comment on Yishan Wong‘s answer. He said:

  1. Vanhulsteijn - CycloneImprove your commute by buying a nice car. I should point out that before this he says, “Improve your commute by living closer to work,” which I couldn’t agree more with, but what I wanted to add was, Improve your commute by buying a nice bicycle. I live in Berkeley, CA. It’s a great city to bike in and public transportation is bike friendly. This is really important since driving into San Francisco is a pain. When I moved here the first thing I did was buy a great bike. This way, instead of being tempted to drive, I am excited to ride.
  2. Fix your computing experience. This to me meant finally investing in an ergonomic monitor and keyboard stand. I did a little research and discovered that I had had my monitor and keyboard at the wrong height for years. It may seem kind of silly at first that my stand cost three times as much as my monitor, but it was worth it. If you are wondering, I have an Ergotron WorkFit-S Dual.

WHEN I WAS PORTUGUESE

Back Stage At The National Theatre

Nathan Lively transports us to behind the curtain at the National Theatre of Portugal, where we witness the inner lives of five veteran actresses navigating the final days of a Broadway-style production. This audio installation offers an intimate glimpse into the theatre’s backstage energy and five individual lives. The end result is an avant-garde narrative and sound experience.

What you see onstage at the theatre is not necessarily the most entertaining part. There is another show being performed offstage by the cast and crew surrounding each performance. In this surround sound installation, Nathan Lively takes us backstage at the National Theatre Of Portugal (Teatro Dona Maria II) as a fly on the wall during the final performances of a 2005 production on the main stage. In this unique perspective of the life of a Portuguese theatre, you will hear each actor move around you as they travel from make-up to sound check to curtain call.

Sound Designer Nathan Lively lived in Lisbon 2003-2007. His first production at Teatro Dona Maria II put him in contact with six experienced actresses performing a Paula Vogel play, which won a Golden Globe for Best Production. Set in NYC in 1981, the play portrays six women struggling to hold onto values of a dying way of life. At once charismatic, arrogant, and pitiful, they tell the story of modernization on and off the stage.
