In an effort to test out my new AutoCAD skills I decided to do a simple sound system design for the ground floor of the house that I am staying at in Nairobi. Once I added the speakers it made sense to put in some video as well. Here you can see the layout of the living room, kitchen, dining room, and bathroom. Content is the same in each room, the idea being that everyone would want to watch the same thing, but might be in different rooms. In this example, everyone wants to watch Flight Of The Conchords.
I also learned how to import 2D views into MAPP Online Pro to provide as architectural aids while looking at acoustical predictions. This wasn’t a huge benefit because of space limitations, but it did become obvious that some acoustical treatment in each room would be necessary. For example, as seen in the prediction below, the left surround speaker blasts a lot of energy into that huge window on the north wall. Some installation would be needed to absorb the reflection coming off of the window.
I doubt anyone would ever actually install a system like this. First of all because the speakers would cost about $8,000 and second because there is more power and quality here than anyone probably needs in their home. But some people watch movies every day. Then again, some people drink coffee every morning from a $60 coffee machine. But that’s another post all together.
